EU rules block education reform

The headlines this morning detail the circumstances around Michael Gove’s u-turn on GCSE reform. Incredibly the EU is in the way.

The ever-popular EU procurement rules would prevent a single body regulating the proposed English baccalaureate.

Let’s remember it was these procurement rules that prevented Bombardier getting a train contract. It was these same rules that brought down LDV vans and trucks. The local government association has criticised them for getting in the way of council cost cutting.

Never let it be said the EU is remote. It clearly pervades every area of public policy, as shown today. It’s proof enough that if you want a loose relationship with the EU based solely on free trade, you need to get out of the EU first.
